I'll guess that this is the most widespread myth in genealogy. Even my grandmother, a very smart lady, believed it. Her mother was a Morse, so my
grandmother claimed kinship to Samuel F. B. Morse, the inventor, and to Elizabeth Morse, the convicted witch. Turns out, both were descended from another
immigrant Morse, Anthony, to whom our immigrant ancestor, Samuel, was not related (as far as anyone knows).
There are zillions of other examples, and we often get inquiries asking us to connect the questioner to a famous person of the same surname, convinced that there is a connection somewhere. That rarely turns out to be true.
